Coffee Dates
"Good Morning!" My mom exclaimed as I slowly inched my way into my parents bedroom.
Wrapped in a fuzzy blanket I yawned, "Morning...oh hi Finn". My family's 16 year old Maine Coon was slumped over my mom's legs at the bottom of the bed.
"So, what are you doing today?" My mom questioned, knowing I usually have plans most days with my best friend Reggie.
"I don't have any plans for today! I do want to go outside at some point, it seems to be such a beautiful day". Before I was able to get my last word out, she grabbed her iPhone off the dresser level to their king sized bed. Opening up the weather app and scrolling to Cherry Hill, NJ she found the weather forecast for today, July19th.
"Wow, it is going to be beautiful... 80 degrees and sunny". Staying on her phone she continued, "Want to go for a coffee run?". For over a year now, my mom and I have been going on mini road trips during the week to find different coffee places around us to try.
"Absolutely, I will go to my room and get ready!" I said with excitement.
My mom, standing at 5'3 with a bright silver bob, is the reason I am who I am today. I have never met someone as dedicated to their children as much as she is, which is just one quality I look up to her for. My family and I always joke that she can somehow get a conversation going with a rock... and it is so true. Her outgoing personality always shines through no matter what mood she is in, day she is having, or where she is. By spending time with her I am able to truly see her personality and that we share very similar qualities. I personally believe that it is so important to have a strong relationship with your mom. By going on these coffee dates around New Jersey and Pennsylvania, we can not only taste great coffee but we also get to strengthen our bond.

"Let's go to Pied Out, I saved four of their delicious cinnamon rolls for us!" I shouted from my room which is next to my parent's, after calling the bakery to set aside the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had.
"Sounds good to me!" my mom answered. We haven't been to this bakery in a few weeks so we were both very anxious to get back. We decided to take our manual two door Jeep Rubicon on the thirty minute journey. My mom, hoisting herself into the truck, exclaimed how just like me, loves the bonding time she and I get on these trips. We both value the little moments, so these mini road trips are very much appreciated by both of us.

After gossiping almost the whole ride there, we pulled into the gravel parking lot beside the bakery. After hopping down onto the ground from the truck, we made our way into the building. The moment I opened the door the aroma of fresh brewed coffee and hot cinnamon rolls hit us. The bakery, filled with plants, flowers, and locally made candles, is such a welcoming place for us to enjoy our coffee dates. We immediately went to the front counter where our box of cinnamon rolls with "Hannah" written in black ink across the top laid. After a quick interaction with the owners of the bakery and of course, getting two large caramel iced coffees, we hopped back into the truck and started our journey home.
"What am I suppose to do when you move back to college?" My mom asked sadly. At the time, my move in date back to BU was a little less than a month away.
"I have no idea, I am going to miss our coffee dates so much". I was generally upset to be leaving my mom and our dates behind. Even though there is FaceTime and text, I knew it wasn't going to be the same. But I also knew that my mom was going to be by my side throughout the semester, always ready for a quick chat on the phone. I know this because she has been there for my brother and I since I can remember. No matter what the circumstance, she has been by my side through it all. She shows me everyday that no matter what, being there for those who need it is so important. But even though I was going to be moving almost three hours away from her, I knew our relationship would still be strong. Plus, there are a few new coffee places in and around Bloomsburg which we have yet to try!

I think you did really well with the dialogue in your draft. It is a good short story about how you and your mom like to try different coffee places that are around you. Something I'm confused on is in your blog it says "So, what do you doing today". I don't know if it is supposed to say "So what are you doing today"? But if it is supposed to say that then disregard what I said. Just seems a little confusing reading. I can understand everything else that is happening and how much you and your mom love going on these coffee trips since you've both been doing this for over a year now.
ReplyDeleteAlso for dialogue, you should separate the dialogue by paragraph once a new person is speaking two people shouldn't be talking in the same paragraph, if you get what I am saying lol and that is something that I just realized now.
