Steeler Nation
Steeler Nation
Steeler’s nation has always been a
big part of my life from the time I was little I always remember the steelers
being on tv on Sundays. I have attended multiple games and participate in
fandom for the Pittsburgh Steelers along with millions of others. One of the
main style of fandom for the Pittsburgh steelers or steelers nation is the
terrible towels. The terrible towels waver throughout the stadium during game
day and hang up on people walls as a way to show support to the steelers. Other
ways to participate in fandom for the Steelers is wearing players jerseys which
shows support to the player and Steelers nation.
The main way to participate in
steelers fandom is the terrible towels, this has been a tradition for steeler
nation ever since I can remember, it is a rally flag and has been used in many
high stress game situations by fans to help rally the steelers to a victory.
According to the American football database the terrible towel has branched
outside steelers stadiums and fans home. The towels have been taken to sites
like the peak of Mount Everest. “The towel has been taken to the peak of Mount
Everest, and even into space on the international Space Station” (American
football database 1). As you can see this has become bigger than just a rally
towel and like the article also states, “It is widely recognized as a symbol of
the Steelers and the city of Pittsburgh” (American football database 1). Not
only does the towel represent fandom for the Steelers but it is also a way that
represents Pittsburgh and gives Pittsburgh a new meaning when it’s referred to
as the steel city. The towel has branched out to other professional sports and
is used at MLB Pittsburgh Pirates game or Pittsburgh Penguins NHL games.
Another way that fandom is showed for
Steeler nation would be purchasing NFL game day ticket, which gives u the
ability to be able to watch your favorite team like the Steelers no matter
where or when they play. In the time we are in now fandom can and is shown be
shown through technology. In the source it says, “Despite the changing
environment, the influx of new technology has allowed individuals access to
their favorite sports team” (Scola 6). In the future I feel fandom will become
more online. Wearing someone’s Steeler’s jersey at the game, out to eat or even
just sitting in your living room is participating in fandom and thousands or
people do. Fandom makes the environment and the games more interesting; it
gives a way for the fans to connect and really feel a part of their team and it
helps create Steelers nation.
In conclusion, there are many ways
which fandom is shown and represents Steeler’s nation. From the terrible towels
to purchasing NFL ticket to get all the games and the latest news and updates,
fans find many ways to stay involved and really invest our time, money and
emotions into the Steelers which is the reason why Steeler’s nation is so
strong. Steeler’s fandom is all over the walls of restaurants in Pittsburgh and
the environment is awesome. Steeler’s nation is taken very serious by the fans
and the city of Pittsburgh, It’s arguably the strongest NFL fan base out there.
