My Second Mom

Image
Kim Warner is many things. She is a mom, a wife ,a daughter, a friend but most important she is a great aunt. She exhibits a motherly figure to many adolescents. Kim loves the beauty of nature. She loves how the moon glows at night, the sunsets and sunrises, the beach, butterflies, palm trees and the list goes on. She loves to call our family and remind us to look at the sky when she thinks the view is pleasant.  In a voicemail I have received from her she says, "Hi Desi, it's me trying to see if you're able to check out the sky right now, it's pretty amazing, bye." Kim appreciates the smallest of things and loves everyone for who they are. She lights up a room with her contagious and loud chuckle. When she smiles her prominent dimples puncture her cheeks. She gives the best and warmest hugs ever in the world. She holds out her arms and brings me in close for a warm and secure hug rocking me side to side.  I sat patiently on my little pink bike. My helmet was tigh...

More than a coach

Image
I am woken up by the aroma of eggs and bacon, while the leaves fall on a bright sunny autumn morning.  I walk down the stairs into the kitchen and he says to me in an excitement tone  “big day today Ryan, It’s championship Sunday”.  It indeed was an exciting day because It was the championship game against our biggest rival northeast catholic badgers.  I couldn’t stop thinking about the game all week, and my dad who is also the coach of my team had made us practice hard before game day so that we are all ready to go. Before I get in the car I’m packing my bag and grabbing my cleats. I could feel the excitement and nerves already starting to kick in and we didn’t even leave yet. My dad can see the nerves taking control of me so he pulls me aside before we leave sits down and says “don’t be nervous, you and the team have worked so hard to get here. I have faith in you and everyone else that we are going to bring the championship home and whatever happens today I...

In A World Of Darkness , She is My Light Aunt Roe holding a gnome I got her My Aunt Roe has always been an icon in the family. She changes her style almost every year and you never know what to expect. At the moment she has chin length, grayish purple hair, almost the color of lavender. She has an absolutely divine curly texture but she straightens it everyday. You'll never see her with undone hair, however she has started to take a liking to the curls and so have I. She loves to go shopping and her closet just keeps growing. She always refers to the commercial, "Too much stuff, not enough space." She has a very tacky style sometimes and I could never be caught dead in what she can find. She is quite the character, always fun to be around and jokes easily. She is also very understanding and has helped me a lot. I'm forever grateful. In 2011, I lost my mom to Leukemia  and my father was never in my life so I was alone and passed around to different family members. Aunt...

The Frankford-Wissinoming Champion

Image
The Frankford-Wissinoming Champion After a long night out with friends at a party I finally arrived home around 1:00 in the morning. I didn't expect anyone to be awake but I immediately noticed my Dad sitting on the couch accompanied by my dog on his lap. After I gently shut the door, he turned and looked at me with tired eyes to ask a simple question, "Hey buddy, how was your night? My dog and Dad in 2016 It didn't occur to me until later that he probably waited hours just to ask me that question in person. I was a new driver at the time and I presume my Dad wanted to see for himself that I made it home safe, even staying up late despite having work just a few hours later. I briefly described my night to him along with the antics my friends and I were up to at the party. Admittedly, I didn't make the smartest decisions that night out, but I always share with my Dad what I do outside the house because I prefer to be open and honest with him. After hearing what I had to...

The Players Coach

Image
"You like walking Cregg? Then keep your head up when you tackle man! Not only are you going to miss a chance at making a big play, but you're gonna hurt yourself dude! This game can only take you so far in life, don't let it take something from you along with it." Coach Kyle Roundtree I can hear him yelling this in his deep but kind voice clearly like a record playing over and over in my head. Coach Roundtree only yelled at me once throughout my entire high school football career, but it is a moment I will never forget. Of course he was concerned about me missing the opportunity at making a big play, but he was more concerned about my well being and health more than anything. From a man who went on to play college football, he saw a lot of fellow teammates get injured and he did whatever he could to bestow his knowledge on the next generation of players. Although he always complained about how old he was, he was only in his late twenties when he coached us, so he had ...

My Inspiration

One day I went down the stair and saw my mom on the couch and I was so happy because I get to ask my question. I wanted to know about how I was when I was a toddler/ baby and I wanted her to tell me about Robby, so I asked mom.        “Okay, sure. When you were a baby you didn’t want people to touch you. When you were born you had low blood sugar and they had to draw blood from your feet because that made you associate touch with pain and didn’t like people hold you.”  “Oh ok, that explains why I never like to be touched when I was a little kid right?” I said in surprise.  "Yep. The only person who was able to hold you was your uncle PD. Do you remember seeing a picture   of him?” “Yes.” My uncle passed away when I was about 2 years old. “When you were a toddler and you were crying. You would cry out Obbbbiiiee. People Thought that you were crying for me. But you were calling for Robbie and I would call upstairs.” She sa...

Raymond Ash, A Classic Man

Image
Nodding in and out of sleep at 5 am in the middle of a cold Pennsylvania forest, a young boy and an old man sit up against a tree in camouflage clothing, each gripping a shotgun in their hands. The boy awakes to a sharp whisper. "Hear that?" the old man asks. Rubbing his eyes a little, the boy tries to wake himself up a bit when he hears it, a turkey is gobbling a few hundred feet from where the two are sitting. Intently scanning the area the sounds came from, the boy can't make out anything other than vegetation. "There" the old man exclaims in a whisper, "between the trees" The boy's heart is pounding and nervousness fills his chest as he frantically tries to see the elusive bird. After a few seconds, he sees something move near a bush and notices a small head rise up above the bush. He slowly raises his shotgun and holds the cold metal to his cheek. Drawing in a long breath he steadies the heavy gun and closes one eye, "I see it" he b...

The Man I Look Up To -Strouse

Image
For most, many children do not lose a parent early in their lifetime. Unfortunately when I was ten years old my dad was in a horrific car accident.  It was a cold fall morning and I was about to take the school bus, then he yelled to me, “ I’ll take you to school today.”  He knew I loved when he drove me to school. I was in class when I heard the dinging from the phone ringing. It was my mom coming to pick me up. At the time my mother and father were separated , and that day was for me to go home. He told me in the morning, "we can take the quads out later for a right."  The Nine year old me was thrilled to hear that, so when my mom picked me up I kept saying, "I'm going to my dads today." Over and over and my mom just didn't know what to say. Then, when we eventually got home she said, "I'm sorry Brons, but your dad passed away."  Changed my life drastically, and I learn...

A Risky Gut Feeling

Image
My alarm goes off at Nine a.m., In excitement, I roll out of the uncomfortable, dissatisfying hotel bedroom, knowing that today is a big day. I quickly hop into the shower, get my uniform on, and start heading down to the hotel breakfast to fill up my stomach. As I entered the room, my dad is sitting around the rest of my teammates parents, with a big coffee in his hand, rapping about how the team has been doing and what we will need to focus on for our team to succeed. He turns his head away from the crowd, looks over at me, and states with excitement, "Big day today buddy, did you get something to eat? Did you get enough rest? You excited?".  Before I was even able to answer his first question, he looks down at his phone and starts to show me the game schedule for the day along with the scouting reports for the teams we were playing against.  If you could not tell already, my dad gets even more excited than me. We ate some breakfast together and My Dad and I  January 9,...

Jordan Rivers - The Natural Grouch Face

Image
Jordan Rivers The Natural Grouch Face     My father seems like a very stern man, but he truly is kind. Every time I see him, his face is stiff and looks almost as if he's glaring all the time. When near him, it's almost as if the wind near him gets colder and colder. Even so, behind that cold and strong look is a caring, kind, and a sarcastic joker.      On a warm, calm day during spring, my father and I decided to go to the mall to get me some more clothes. I look over at him and see him with his usual stiff, stern, annoyed face.     "Yo, Dad?" I asked hesitantly. "You good?" I've been with him since morning and I have not seen anything that would have made him upset.     "Yeah, Scrap, I'm chilling." He replies. "Want me to start yelling to make you feel better?" He says jokingly. I knew he wasn't lying since he used my nickname. He usually says my actual name when he's bothered.       He's the type of person that cha...

A True Role Model

Image
On any given fall day you could look into the back yard of my aunts house and most likely see a blonde haired boy and his burly white haired 75 year old Uncle Tom playing tackle football. No matter how busy Tom's schedule was he always made time for our backyard football battles. For as long as I can remember we have always been competing against each other. It didn't matter if it was football, basketball, sprints, eating competitions, chess matches, or seriously anything we could think of. Our competitive battles we had launched my interest in sports and I was always lucky enough to have the opportunity to have season tickets to Penn State football games and Bucknell Basketball games.  The hour and a half drive to State College usually consisted of stories from Tom's life and me getting car sick from my Aunt and Uncles excessive breaking. I have a very clear memory of one Sunday afternoon where my sixth grade self just had his best game of football I've ever had. My un...

rough draft blogger

Usually, Rachel drove while I would sit passenger and control the two M's maps and music. We choose that the passenger always has control while the driver's primary focus should always be the road to stay safe. She knew that even though there was no physical destination, it was the journey that mattered.        Loud banging through the speakers playing the songs melody's and signing words to forget the worries of present troubles. Singing words from songs that mean the most without even realizing that all the words were already known by heart—zipping through the windy road that curves every three seconds. Rachel always says that having the top down, especially on the jeep, always brings more relief and happiness when trying to settle down the mind. One of Rachel's favorite parts was feeling the wind rush in front of her face and through her silky beach blond hair. She loved the feeling of being free, even if it was for only a few hours. ...

My Role Model Large number of immigrants come to the US every year. People come from all over the world including China, Mexico and many European countries. My mom was one of them. Stout kittle lady at just 5 feet. She came to the US at the age of 15 all by herself.  I asked her if she was scared to be in an unfamiliar country by herself with no friends or family. She answered, "At the time I was still very young, so I did not know what fear was." She had her first job in Philadelphia at a small clothing repair shop. The workers there did works like sewing holes in clothes, sewing on a button and repairing shoes. She often had to compete for the tasks because whoever got them, is getting paid. "I was only 15 at the time and all the others were older than me so I'd often have my customers stolen from me, and I could not do anything about it." The wage back then was really low. She would get paid 5 cents for sewing on a button, 10 cents for sewing holes and 25 cen...

The Greatest Great-Grandmother

Image
Arlene "Nanny" Kressler      My great-grandmother, who everyone called Nanny, was a kind woman, with kind eyes behind her glasses. She changed the style of her glasses every few years and always complained that she liked the old ones better than the new ones. Just like with her glasses, she hated every change made with her whiteish gray hair- it was always cut either too short or not short enough for her liking, but she was the only one to be able to notice. Her face was not as wrinkled as someone of her age should have been, since she slept on her back for her whole life, completely still the entire night, laying as if she were a mummy. She loved to wear a bright colored or patterned shirt underneath neutral toned cardigans, because any temperature below 70 degrees was too cold for her. While she was a very caring person, she was also the most stubborn person I have ever met in my entire life. There were many occasions of her stubbornness, but pe...

The best mom you never asked for

Image
The best mom you never asked for  My mom has always been my strongest supporter and has always been there, I have five siblings so there is six including me. Every morning she wakes up at 6:00 in the morning at our smaller ranch house in Montoursville PA, so she could get started working for the company her and my father own, which is a crane engineering company called CtK. She's such a smart loving brave and fearless women, everything I need she is always on top of it and makes sure that all of her children's needs are meant. "Time to wake up for school" My mom says when the clock hits 7:15 my siblings all groan, get up and slowly get ready for there day at school, once we are all ready for school she runs each and every one of us to school on time. Once all of her children are in school she has to rush back and take care of other business. She races to the grand old office building, with machines and dust everywhere and walks into the entrance as she scurry's i...
